In the heart of Colombia’s coffee country, a new initiative called SANA is uplifting the mental health of women coffee farmers. Launching on June 23, 2025, SANA emerged from the pages of "We Belong: An Anthology of Colombian Women Coffee Farmers," created by Lucia Bawot. This unique program offers vital psychosocial support, ensuring that women who toil in the fields aren’t just recognized for their labor, but also for their emotional and mental wellness.
Understanding the Need for Mental Health Support
The journey to SANA’s inception began when Bawot discovered that many women farmers possess untold stories of resilience and struggle. "During my interviews, it felt like therapy sessions, where women could open up in a safe space," she shared. This realization hit home for Bawot, pushing her to create a program that fosters community and provides access to psychological support.
Breaking Stigmas and Providing Accessible Care
SANA's mission revolves around breaking the stigma of mental health in agricultural communities. By employing local Colombian psychologists to conduct teletherapy sessions, workshops, and community-building activities, the program is not only accessible but deeply rooted in the cultural context of its participants. This is crucial in addressing mental wellness in rural areas where traditional care has been inaccessible.
Real Impact: Voices of Participants
Preliminary feedback from program participants has been overwhelmingly positive. A surprising 100% reported feeling heard, and 85% appreciated the remote access to therapy. These metrics highlight the program's potential to make lasting changes in mental health perceptions among women coffee growers. To sustain this initiative, SANA aims to enroll 120 Colombian women farmers in 2025. Every participant’s journey can be sponsored through a modest $25 monthly donation.
