Cold Coffee Takes Center Stage This Summer
As the summer heat blanketed the United States, a new report from the National Coffee Association (NCA) reveals a rising trend in cold coffee consumption, along with bottled water and soda. The NCA's Fall 2025 National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) report checked the pulse of American coffee habits, showing that 66% of Americans had consumed coffee the previous day—a consistent finding from earlier this year.
Refreshing Trends and Insights
The report highlighted the growing preference for cold coffee options. A notable 32% of participants reported enjoying cold brews, frozen coffee, or nitro drinks recently. Cold brew topped the list at 21%, followed closely by frozen/blended options at 19%. This appetite for cold coffee ties in well with the lifestyle of younger adults, particularly, with 46% of 18–24-year-olds reaching for specialty coffee drinks.
The Data That Tells a Story
Drilling deeper, the study found that coffee drinkers averaged 2.8 cups a day, with a significant 85% of them enjoying their brew during breakfast. Interestingly, regions reported varied coffee-drinking habits: the South led at 69% past-day incidence over the West (68%) and Northeast (61%). As coffee shops pivot to meet demand, ensuring they offer options like nitro cold brew or specialty drinks may enhance customer experiences and satisfaction.
The Rise of Takeaway Culture
Additionally, convenience remains a key factor in coffee consumption. The report noted a spike in ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee options, with 19% of participants opting for these chilled drinks—a direct response to the summer heat. This trend indicates a substantial market opportunity for coffee shops and suppliers dedicated to offering high-quality RTD options and exploring flavors tailored for summer enjoyment.
Where's the Best Brew?
For many coffee enthusiasts searching for the best specialty coffee shops nearby, the emphasis on artisanal, high-end experiences is crucial. Whether it’s discovering a luxurious sit-in café or seeking a coffee shop that serves single-origin beans, knowing consumers' preferences can significantly influence where they choose to spend their time and money. Some of the most rewarding experiences can be found in high-end espresso bars that focus on exquisite flavors and unique blends.
As trends shift, coffee shop owners and suppliers must adapt to meet the evolving tastes of consumers. Whether it's offering exclusive seasonal drinks or maintaining a cozy ambience in their establishments, the insights from the NCA's report serve as a valuable resource for tapping into the heart of the coffee market this summer.
